Tips for aspiring producers (and advanced ones, too)

Making music > gear..even though I love it!

Every once in a while, I get asked a few quick and/or important general tips for making music. I’ve been making music for a little over two decades, and made a few tunes every now and then, so maybe that’s why. Or, at least that’s an indication that I manage to finish my feeble efforts.

I’m planning to update this blog a bit more often with production-related material (there already is some), and this time I wanted to get busy with some of the basics.
I started keeping a notepad so that I’d write a blog post on the “useful tips for beginners” topic, and this is it. It’s definitely more of a general one than a technique-specific one.
I’m definitely not a “master” of making music, but these topics are something I can look back on and say at least I’ve learned something valuable regarding them and all of this is based on experience.

These are in no particular order.

1) DO YOUR OWN THING.  Continue reading Tips for aspiring producers (and advanced ones, too)

Coffee Crazy EP

This EP is a “pay-what-you-want” type of release, which I haven’t done before, and I’m curious to find out how it’ll do.
I’m not saying it’s a “please-don’t-pay-me-anything” type of release, but you’re not obliged to pay anything: you’re free to download it, of course.
Also, as some people who downloaded the free albums said “I gladly would’ve paid you for these free albums” when I gave them out, now is your chance.
However, if you don’t find the EP good enough or if you’re a bit low on the cashmunny, hey, no blaming fingers will be pointed at anyone.
But share the music at least, please.

To get the EP, surf your funky web ship to Bandcamp.

Also, if you wish, grab a coffee-themed Lightless desktop picture pack by clicking here; it’s done by the ever-so-amazing Mark Tarnashinsky.

Yona – “Kevätfiilis” (Fanu remix) [free download]

I’m a huge fan of Yona and her original song, “Kevätfiilis”.
I asked Yona if I could remix the track, and to my delightful surprise, I was given the permission to do it.

The title of the track if Finnish and it translates into “Springtime vibe”.
I did the remix when the winter here in Finland finally gave way to spring and the sun started shining, melting away the snow and ice we’d seen throughout the long, dark winter we had, so the timing was perfect.

We mutually decided that we’d give the remix out for free.
You can download the mp3 on Fanu’s Soundcloud page.

I hope you like it as much as I liked both enjoying the original (which you can easily find on Youtube) as well as crafting the remix, which I think came out pretty warm and energetic, just like proper springtime should be.

Play it out loud and enjoy some true kevätfiilis!
